The ESPR (Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation) is a European regulation adopted in 2023 that establishes a framework for the ecodesign of sustainable products. This regulation aims to make products more durable, repairable, reusable and recyclable. It introduces in particular the obligation of the Digital Product Passport (DPP) for certain products, enabling better traceability and transparency on product life cycles. The ESPR regulation applies progressively from 2027 according to product categories, with an implementation schedule staggered over several years. It covers a wide range of products, including electronics, textiles, furniture, chemicals and many other sectors. The main objective is to reduce the environmental impact of products throughout their life cycle, from design to end of life. The regulation imposes strict requirements on information about repairability, spare parts availability, energy consumption and carbon footprint. Manufacturers must provide detailed information via the DPP, accessible to consumers, repairers and authorities. The ESPR regulation is part of the European Green Deal and the European Union's strategy for a circular economy. It complements other regulations such as the Ecodesign Directive and the Energy Labeling Directive. Companies must anticipate these obligations and implement compliant product data management systems, such as those offered by Verisav.
