Recyclability refers to the ability of a product or its components to be recycled at end of life. It depends on material composition, separability and the existence of recycling infrastructure. The ESPR regulation imposes recyclability requirements for certain products. Verisav records in the DPP information on material composition and recyclability, thus facilitating end-of-life product management. Recyclability is a major issue in the circular economy, as it enables reduction of virgin raw material consumption and limits waste landfilling. A recyclable product must be designed to facilitate separation of different materials, use materials compatible with existing recycling channels, and avoid substances that complicate the recycling process. Recyclability depends on several factors: nature of materials used (some materials such as glass, aluminum or paper are easily recyclable, while others such as composites are more difficult to recycle), ease of separation of different components, presence of collection and recycling infrastructure, and available recycling technologies. The ESPR regulation imposes recyclability requirements for many product categories, particularly in terms of percentage of recyclable materials, ease of disassembly and separation, and information on recycling channels. The DPP can store all recyclability-related information: detailed material composition, percentage of recyclable materials, disassembly instructions to facilitate recycling, information on available recycling channels, etc. Verisav integrates this information into the DPP, enabling consumers to know product recyclability before purchase and facilitating end-of-life product management by directing consumers to appropriate recycling channels.
