The Digital Product Passport is not a PDF behind a QR code. Here is how to implement it: map the data, choose identifiers, publish a resolvable data carrier and keep the passport updated after the sale — with Verisav.
Implementing a DPP means structuring product identity (GTIN/serial), exposing regulatory data via a resolvable link (often GS1 Digital Link), and planning post-sale updates (after-sales, repair, second life). Verisav industrialises these three layers.
EU regulation sets the framework; the first sectoral obligations are approaching. Waiting for your category’s delegated act before you start means arriving too late on the data.
The Battery Passport (Reg. 2023/1542) is mandatory from 18 February 2027 for EV, LMT and industrial batteries > 2 kWh — the first large-scale sectoral DPP.
ESPR (2024/1781) extends the DPP to other categories via delegated acts. Adoption windows are indicative; compliance follows ≥ 18 months after.
ERP, PLM, suppliers, compliance PDFs: without a common model and governance, the passport stays incomplete. Software does not replace data scoping.
A pragmatic roadmap for manufacturers and economic operators.
Identify affected SKUs (category, EU markets, volumes). For batteries: Annex XIII. For others: anticipate typical ESPR attributes.
List where GTIN, BOMs, certificates, footprint, manuals and parts live. Measure supplier gaps before picking a tool.
Define the granularity (model / batch / item), GS1 Digital Link syntax and physical carrier (label, packaging or product marking). A QR code without reliable resolution is not a DPP.
Industrialise one reference: data schema, completeness checks, passport page and access rights. Test scans for consumers, repairers and auditors.
Attach warranties, failures and repairs to the same identity. Without post-sale events, the DPP dies at delivery.
API to ERP/PLM, access roles, audit log, regulatory watch. Prepare the EU registry and machine-readable exchange (JSON-LD / RDF).
A QR code that opens a marketing PDF is not compliant. The DPP requires structured data, access rights and persistence.
A passport locked to one vendor risks portability and longevity. Prefer open standards (GS1, RDF/OWL, JSON-LD).
ESPR targets circularity. Without writing interventions back to the passport, you ship a dead label.
